These songbirds are very romantic; they mate for life and are often seen feeding together, the husband will carefully offer a seed to his wife in what appears to us humans as a kiss.
Many believe that when a cardinal is spotted, it is a passed loved one visiting you. This is especially true when you are in most need of them or miss them. Cardinals will also appear during celebrations or times of hopelessness to let you know that they are always with you.
We have a pair that have been in our backyard for years. I love that they winter over, so that even when all is a colorless blanket of snow, these birds bring a dot of red to the landscape.
